"Suffering is transformed and elevated when, in those moments, we become aware of God’s closeness and solidarity. This is the certainty that gives inner peace and spiritual joy to the person who suffers generously and offers his pain as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God. (Romans 12:1)" - Pope John Paul II

From Father Tony’s Desk

When I was a seminarian, I attended a show, whose name I cannot remember, in which there was a song entitled "Freedom Isn’t Free." I stated that "you have to pay a price...for your liberty." This weekend we celebrate the birth of our nation, "a nation conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal." (Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address) But the concept of freedom or liberty does not mean that there are no limits on what a man or woman can do. When Jesus tells us that the truth will make us free, he did not mean that we can trample on the rights of others. True freedom ends where the rights of others begin. That is why, for example, that we have traffic laws. We cannot drive in any way we want, because speed and reckless driving can endanger not only our lives, but the lives of others as well. The right to life and safety automatically restricts the right of others to take away those rights. Justice demands that citizens do not take the law into their own hands when they are wronged, but that they turn to the lawful authorities to handle crime and punishment. Freedom is a God given right, but God also will demand an accounting of how we have used our freedom for good and for the growth of his kingdom.

Payment is to be made to "Our Lady of Mt. Carmel." Also, Saturday evening and Sunday Mass stipends will be $15.00, while weekday Masses will remain at $10.00. The next celebration of Baptism will take place on Sunday, July 11. Because Father Tony will be out of state in the beginning of August, there will be no baptisms that month. Arrangements must be made by calling the rectory at least one month in advance. Parents must attend the instruction session. The Baptism Preparation team will call you to notify you when the next session will take place.

There is a "Book of Remembrance" in the shrine area by the Sacred Heart. Please feel free to place the names of your deceased loved ones in this book. Names should be put in only once, and we will remember them at every Mass celebrated every day.

God does not take a vacation. When you plan a vacation, the first thing you should do is to find out where the nearest Catholic church is. I was taught this when I was in grammar school. Remember, God keeps giving you life and everything else twelve months of the year. The least you can give him is one hour a week, even when you are on vacation. So, unless you are going to Saudi Arabia, or anywhere else where your faith is forbidden, you should be able to find a Catholic church or chapel, or somewhere that the Mass is being celebrated. Also, remember your parish. Our bills don’t take a vacation. Please try to make up for your missed contributions.

If your child has not yet been to C.C.D., you can call the rectory to have your name be put on the mailing list. You can call the rectory for more information. For any child, who is being registered for the first time, a baptism certificate is required. The fee is $60.00 for one child, $120.00 for two or more, if you are a registered member of the parish. Otherwise, the fee is $75.00 per child. Church law requires that children preparing for the sacraments of First Communion and Confirmation be given at least two years of preparation for each sacrament.

Now that it is summer, people tend to wear less in an effort to keep cool. However, some outfits are not proper attire for attending Mass. Please wear appropriate clothing–no shorts more than two or three inches above the knees, tank tops, or other revealing outfits, please. Have respect for God, other people, and yourself.

On the weekend of July 10-11, we will have a speaker from The Scholarship Program for Inner-City Children to speak to us on behalf of their Adopt-A-Student program. We ask that you give consideration to this program which provides partial tuition scholarships to students from low income families to attend Catholic schools in the inner-city.

O. L. OF MT. CARMEL FEAST 2010

The feast in honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel will take place on July 16, 17, & 18. But the feast cannot happen or be a success without you. We need volunteers. We will again be selling the memorial balloons, but this year it will not be limited to remembering the deceased, but you can put any intention you wish. We are also in need of donations of cases of water and soda to sell at the feast. The more we get donated, the more we will be able to make to pay for the feast. Please call if you can help us. Please come and help. Get your family members and friends to come to the feast. We have brought back a wonderful tradition. Let’s keep it going.

In the back of church, in the lobby, there is a box in which you can place your used ink cartridges from your computer printers, any except Epson. These must be the small kind, not the large barrel type. We can get up to $3.00 for each one. This will greatly help your parish. Won’t you join us in this endeavor? It will also help to recycle these cartridges. Every little bit helps as we work to pay down our debts. It will also help us to do so much more here at Our Lady of Mount Carmel for the future.

On Monday, July 5, the Township of Montclair will host its annual Fourth of July Parade. We will be marching as a parish in the parade. If you are interested in joining us, to show our Italian Catholic heritage, please let Father Tony know by July 4. We will also be advertizing our upcoming Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. We will give you details about time and placement of march for that day.
